When you come to BrainFlex® Wellness Club, the first thing we want to do is get to know you. We like to understand what your concerns are, and details such as your career and important life accomplishments. After our initial meeting and tour of the program, we invite you to attend a free session to see how the program works. If you decide that you would like to join our wellness club, we will ask you complete a registration packet, which allows us to understand your interests as well as your basic medical history. After becoming a member, we incorporate everything we have learned and develop an action plan that focuses on goals for the four key concepts, which are tailored to meet your unique needs.
When you arrive for a session, you are greeted at the door. The first hour of each session is for socialization. We set out healthy snacks and coffee or tea, and you have time to chat with others, work on your personalized ‘brain-training’ binder or engage in various interactive games.
During the next hour, we move on to nutrition. Our members participate in the preparation of healthy snacks while discussing the nutrients in each ingredient, and what those healthy components do for our brains and bodies.
Brain training is the next part of the session in which we engage in activities that stimulate both the left and right sides of the brain. Left brained activities are those which challenge our language, math, reasoning and logic skills. Right brained activities include poetry, music, painting and other types of expressive art.
The last part of our session includes exercise and self-affirmations. Our exercise component focuses on resistance, balance, and range of motion. We have chair gyms, exercise bands, and light weights to improve our core strength and range of motion to help prevent injury and increase performance in activities of daily living. Self-affirmations are phrases repeated by our members to increase their confidence and remind them of their value and worth. An example would be, “I am strong” or “I love myself just the way that I am”. Research shows that positive self-talk has a positive impact on how we perceive ourselves and others.
Our goal at BrainFlex® Wellness Club is healthy aging and living well, and we do that through a program that incorporates four key concepts: socialization, nutrition, brain training, and exercise. When these four concepts are incorporated into our lives on a regular basis, they have the potential to deter cognitive decline and improve quality of life.
